Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion skin care

By David Maillie

Dermabrasion is a technique that has been around for as long as chemical peels and a long time constituent of skin care.  Basically, dermabrasion is a technique used by dermatologists and plastic surgeons which uses a wire brush or sanding device to remove the top most layers of skin.  Microdermabrasion is very similar, but uses very tiny particles or crystals to sand blast the top layers of skin away.  Both have the same result of smoothening the skin and remove or lessen scars from acne, chicken pox and even accidents.

Dermabrasion techniques can encompass several different machines and technologies, of these the most popular is microdermabrasion.  Microdermabrasion, due to its quicker application times, ease of use, and lower cost is a very common procedure at local medispas and regular spas.   Generally most doctors will offer a series of 3-6 treatments over a period of a few months.  The outcome is usually a great reduction in the highs and lows of the scars and facial skin problem areas.  Some areas, like crows feet and wrinkles and fine lines around the mouth will disappear, but regular treatment will be necessary as they will usually return within a few months time.

Dermabrasion is carried out with a tool called a dermabrader which has several different adapters and tools for different skin areas.  The surgeon may use sand paper of varying grits depending on the thickness of the skin and the skin problem in question.  There is also a wire brush attachment which is used for deep furrowing like wrinkles and cystic acne scars.  For dermabrasion a solution of ethyl chloride or another local skin anesthetic is used.  Ethyl chloride is favored for its ability to not change the structure and contour of the skin so it can be directly worked on.

Microdermabrasion tends to be used as a lighter and less invasive treatment requiring little if any down time.  A sprayer is used that emits tiny particles or crystals that sandblast the facial skin and then, through suction, removes the crystals and skin cells.  Microdermabrasion is similar to a superficial skin peel like glycolic or salicylic acid.  They are great for revitalizing sun damaged skin, treating and removing freckles and some sun spots and refining and revitalizing skin.  But they are limited in their effectiveness against deeper skin issues like scars and similar.  Dermabrasion penetrates deeper and has a longer lasting effect similar to a mild or deeper skin peel like the TCA peel.

After a dermabrasion the patient has an antibiotic ointment like Neosporin applied and the face may be bandaged to promote healing and hold the antibiotic ointment better.  After a few days, just like with a skin peel the skin will harden and form a crust and start to come off by flaking or peeling.  Use of the antibiotic ointment will loosen this crusty skin and help remove it revealing the younger, healthier skin underneath.  The TCA peel is still the preferred skin care treatment of most dermatologists and plastic surgeons as its effects last longer and it is also highly effective on current mild to severe acne.  Article courtesy of Bestskinpeel.com
