How to clear a blocked sinus naturally

By David Maillie

If you are like most people you probably suffer from blocked sinuses or similar malody at least once a year.  Depending upon the seriousness of the condition it can be both frustrating and painful.  Sometimes it can seem to last for weeks at a time.  Sinus problems can be brought on by cold weather, pre-existing conditions (like the flu, bronchitis, etc.), or even allergies.  More serious sinus problems can result in infections, fever, extreme pain, migraines and even inner and middle ear infections which can require several courses of antibiotics to treat.

But with proper intervention and treatment it is possible to stop or prevent a blocked sinus from becoming a more serious sinus problem or infection.  Following are several natural methods recommended by ENT (ear, nose and throat specialists) worldwide:

One of the most recommended treatments for blocked or partially blocked sinuses and similar nasal problems is nasal irrigation with a simple saline spray.  These usually come in a small spray can with a built-in nasal adapter.  They are simple to use (just aim up the nose and spray as directed) and relatively cheap and can be bought at most any grocery store, drugstore or even Walmart for a few dollars.  These nasal Céline sprays are non-habit forming and are quite effective in removing blockages, moisturizing the nasal passages and in improving blocked sinuses or even sinusitis.

Another highly recommended treatment is as simple as increasing the humidity by using a vaporizer to put steam in the air.  These vaporizers have been found to be highly effective in reducing bacterial content and viral content in the air.  By placing a vaporizer next to one's bed at night can greatly help to break up blockages in one's sinus cavities during the night.  This can help lead to waking up feeling better and more refreshed.

In more extreme sinus blockages where pain is very prevalent, a warm compress (a hot, wet cloth) held over the affected sinus areas can lessen the pressure, reduce the pain and help release some of the blockage.  It also helps to use nasal irrigation as indicated above along with warm compresses.  In cases of blockage that involves severe pain and yellow or green discharge from the nose a doctor should be seen and will most likely prescribe an antibiotic like amoxicillin to treat any bacterial infection.  Viral infections generally will need to run their course as any doctor will probably tell you.

Sometimes the pressure from sinus blockage can progress to the inner ear and middle ear.  What happens is the pressure constricts the inner ear tube and this results in fluid and air being trapped around the eardrum.  This can result in a inner ear or middle ear infection and can greatly affect one's balance, ability to concentrate and even result in pain that radiates throughout the skull (usually pain from an inner or middle ear infection will affect the areas above the ears to the top of the skull).

If the sinus blockage was caused by a virus then you may just need to let it run its course.  If the blockage was caused by a bacterial infection, allergies or some other reason than a doctor may prescribe an antibiotic and the above listed natural treatments will definitely help in most cases.  In all cases one should always consult their doctor prior to any self treatment.
