For proper skin health the skin must be moisturized. Proper moisturization involves using any good quality non-comodogenic moisturizer or lotion. Non-comodogenic means non pimple, zit and acne causing. Be careful here as many lotions can actually exacerbate your pimples and make them worse. You should try several brands and find the one that works best for your unique skin. Jergen’s makes some great lotions and Walmart and Target have some great generic brand lotions for under $4 and they are non-comodogenic. There is no need to buy the expensive lotions at department stores for $20 - $200 or more (they do not work any better and you are throwing money away – see Consumer reports on skin care lotions and creams for more on this). You can tell if your skin is dry and not properly moisturized. It will be dry and flaky, moist skin will be supple and less prone to injury and will heal faster. Your skin is a very effective barrier in preventing viruses and disease and when it is not properly moisturized and hydrated (moisture from the inside) than it leaves you and the skin more prone to injury, sickness, etc…

So along with proper moisturization with a good non pimple causing lotion or moisturizer, proper hydration (drinking plenty of water) is very important. It is recommended that one drink between 8 and 12 glasses of water per day. Proper hydration also helps to flush toxins from your body and some of these toxins can cause pimples, increased oil and even acne. You can also spot treat pimples with crèmes and solutions like Clearasil, Oxy10 and other variants which contain solutions of benzoyl peroxide and/or salicylic acid and other low percentage acids like glycolic. Usually the percentage or strength of the acids included as the main ingredients in these products are between 2 and 6%. They will work a little, but don’t expect miracles as you see featured on TV commercials. Also, keep in mind, benzoyl peroxide can kill bacteria, but it can also dry up and redden your face and make the pimples more inflamed and actually exacerbate or worsen the problem (also benzoyl peroxide is a bleaching agent and will permanently discolor your clothes, sweaters, etc… so be careful in its application and wash your hands thoroughly after each use.
