In our fast-paced and high stress world few of us take the time to stop and smell the proverbial roses. We are just too busy rushing from here to there and don't take time to take care of ourselves. This doesn't just mean eating the correct foods and getting the proper amount of sleep, albeit they are very important, we also need to take time to relax and when I say relax I mean both our body and our minds. One of the best proven ways to relax both our bodies and our minds is meditation.
Scientists and researchers have found in numerous studies that meditating for just 10 to 20 minutes a day can greatly reduce hypertension or high blood pressure, stress levels and much more. So, it is easy to see that meditation is very important to your health, but did you also know it can help you think more clearly, remember things better, and get more accomplished?
Students whom meditate daily have been found on average to have higher course grades, better levels of understanding, and are less stressed than other students. It a kin to the obvious idea that students to do their homework get better grades than those that don't. Those that meditate do better in general than those that don't. Apparently what scientists and psychologists have discovered is that meditation reduces the levels of stress were homes that are harmful in many ways.
Stress hormones can cause high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems, mental cognition problems, memory problems, etc. when allowed to build up in the body over the years these same stress hormones can cause all sorts of maladies, illnesses and diseases. They can even cause strokes, heart attacks and even death. Proper meditation reduces the levels of stress hormones in the body.

This clears the mind and allows the brain to work more efficiently. Stress hormones have actually been proven to have a negative effect on the brain similar to that of cocaine and other harmful drugs. Over the years if someone is subjected to high levels of stress this can actually lead to the exact same mental or brain damage as a drug addict would have. A recent episode on the history Channel actually covered this negative effect of stress hormones on the brain.
One of the best ways to negate or limit these stress hormones is to limit the stress. Now, in our economy with the current recession (or even depression) that is currently going on it is not possible for most to even consider changing their career path for a less stressful career. Most people have to stick with what they have and hope for the best. These are stressful times and they're not go away. The best way to deal with it is to find a way to rest your mind and clear it from stress periodically throughout the day.
The easiest way to do this is through meditation and scientists and psychologists have proven that interest once or twice a day for 10 to 20 minutes each meditation can completely turn around the negative factors from the stressful hormones brought about from the daily stress that we deal with.

For most 10 to 20 minutes of meditation may be hard to do it first as you will find your mind wandering from thought to thought and then back to stressful thoughts and work, etc... every time your mind wanders a need to bring it back and focus on one thing. One non-stressful thing. In the martial arts and in various Buddhist temples they train their underlings or students to meditate and focus on a burning candle in a dark room. This gives them very singular focal point to help them empty their minds and properly meditate.
Meditation is not hard and does not take expensive classes for trainings to be able to do. Anyone can meditate. You don't have to have a darkroom in a candle burning in it to do it. Just find a quiet place where you will not be interrupted. Sit in a comfortable position on the floor. Use pillows if you need to fear Nice and to sit comfortably. But do not lay down while doing it else you might draft off to sleep.

Basically what you want to do is let your mind and your body just flow and empty itself. Try to think of nothing. If you find it impossible to empty your mind then try and focus on one thing and one thing only. Pick something simple like a sculpture or a picture. Focus on your breathing and try to take slower, longer and deeper breaths in a relaxing way. Some people find it helpful to count solely from 1 to 3 or so as you breathe in them to hold your breath for the same count and then to repeat the same as you breathe out.
If you continue to do this on a daily basis over the next couple weeks or months you'll start to see significant decrease in your body's blood pressure and increase and your health and mental agility and cognition. If you don't believe me just go to your local Walmart or other local drugstore and used their automatic blood pressure machine to check your blood pressure. Keep a track of it and watch it drop to reduce the levels of stress in your body that can build up over time.
Remember the saying early to bed, early to rise will make you healthy, wealthy and wise. Well, so will meditation.
