Can milk abstinence cure acne?

By David Maillie

The federal government and FDA (Food and Drug Administration) state to drink several glasses of milk each day for children and teens.  We know that milk is important for healthy bones and muscle development, but could this also be a bad omen for teens and young adults if it also caused or worsened acne?  What if milk caused acne?  If it did cause acne, what exactly is it in milk that causes this?  An allergy?  Excess sugars in the blood? Calcium levels or irregularities?  Or is the idea of milk causing acne all just a myth or old wives tale?

We all have instilled in us the idea that milk and related dairy products like cheese are important enough to be one of the all important food groups that make up the food pyramid.  We are told that we must eat several helpings daily from each of these groups (grains, meats, fruit and vegetables, milk and cheese, etc…) for proper health.  But what if one or more of those food groups contributed to acne?

Well, its probably best to start with the actual definition of acne.  Acne is a condition involving inflammation of the skin which is mostly attributed to hormonal levels and changes in adolescent youths going through puberty (yes, there are other causes from stress to cleanliness, but it is mostly caused by hormones).  What happens is that the hormonal levels rise and result in increased production of sebum or oil from the sebaceous glands.  This is what gives teenagers that greasy and shiny look to their faces.  This sebum fills and clogs pores which then become ripe breeding grounds for bacteria.  The pores become blocked, infected and inflamed.

This hormonal difference is why one two teenagers can share the same diet of sodas and junk food and one can have acne and the other not.  The difference is in their hormones which are determined from the moment when they are conceived.  Each person is genetically different, so we will all have different hormone levels and that is the real reason why some people get acne as teenagers, some get it as adults and some never get it at all (except for an occasional pimple every now and then).  So, now what could cause milk to actually exacerbate or even cause acne?

Milk is mass produced from farmed cows.  These cows have hormones that they naturally excrete in their milk and some may have genetically altered levels of these bovine hormones in their milk (some cows except in the case of organic milk can and have been genetically engineered to have higher milk production and hormonal levels).  These hormones stay in the milk throughout production and are in the finished product you buy at your local grocery store or Walmart.  Now, it has been tested by numerous researchers and found that some of these bovine (cow) hormones can actually be testosterone precursors like progesterone and other related steroidal hormones.

These steroidal hormones like progesterone when introduced to the human body are converted to testosterone and dihydrotestosterone amongst other biproducts.  The dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is most important to this milk and acne discussion as it is the steroidal compound that is actually linked to sebum and oil production.  The higher the levels of sebum one has then the higher the chances of getting acne.  So, basically, by drinking milk and especially non organic milk one will most likely increase their bodies levels of steroidal hormones and precursors which are proven to be directly linked to oil production and acne.  A study by the American Academy of Dermatology showed a correlation between milk and acne and it didn't matter if skim or lowfat was used.  They all showed the same hormonal correlation.

So, being that milk is definitely a possible cause of acne, maybewhat should one do to maintain the food pyramid and its group of the dairy products?  One is cut down on non organic milk (organic milk has fewer hormones in it).  Two, use soy milk.  This completely blocks out all the additional hormones from milk.  Also use non dairy products that are made from soy instead of regular cheeses and such.  By cutting down on the true dairy products and finding healthy alternatives especially in the teenage years one can reduce their chances or possibly even the severity of their acne.
