Acne, is a condition that normally affects adolescent teenagers and young adults but can affect people at any age.  It can be mild as in the form of pimples, small postules and blackheads or more severe in the case of cystic or nodular acne with depressed scars.  Regardless of the severity, acne can severely affect ones outlook an life and cause or worsen psychological attributes of depression and other psychosis that would normally remain benign.  Thousands of teenagers have gone so far as to quit school and even commit suicide with acne and the resulting depression being one of the leading factors.  Side effects of drugs like Accutane don't help.  This is what I and many others have found in our battle with cystic acne:

The latest research on acne and treating acne proves that food and diet is not the cause.  It is more of a hereditary and genetic issue that causes a overproduction of sebum or sebaceous gland oil.  This oil gets backed up and clogs pores which become breeding grounds for acne causing bacteria.  In its most extreme form this results in inflamed cysts or nodules that leave permanent scars.  When a patient sees a dermatologist they will usually start them on a prescription of a antibiotic like tetracycline.  This will work well in some cases.  The problem is that the body and the bacteria will eventually grow immune to this treatment.  This can actually lead to stronger acne manifestations which is exactly what happened in my case.  What the dermatologist also didn’t tell me and which he didn’t know at that time was that tetracycline can and did cause my teeth to become very yellow.  Something to do with the drugs interaction with the calcium in bones results in very yellow teeth.  This yellowing is permanent also and many times will not even come out after one or two professional teeth whitening treatments at a dentist.

In the past twenty years, the next step for severe acne  was automatically Accutane.  This was the acne cure or miracle drug and it was and still is very expensive at around $2 to $3 per pill.  Accutane is usually taken for a 3 to 5 month cycle and results in very dry skin as the bodies ability to produce oil or sebum is greatly reduced.  I took the Accutane and would have taken anything at that time if it had promised to treat and cure my cystic acne.  Amazingly, and to my horror, Accutane actually made the acne much worse as it is said to bring out all the next several years of acne at once – and did it ever.  I had a moderate case of cystic acne and after one month of treatment I looked awful.  The doctor and everyone encouraged me to continue with treatment saying things would soon get better, much better and they did.  

After this first month, things start to slowly get better and at the near end of the cycle the acne was gone as it is for most people.  Accutane, lately, has been found to have some very serious side effects like serious depression and even suicide.  I don’t remember too much about feeling overly depressed, but am more worried about effects it could have had on my liver and kidneys and such.  Every day now I see lawsuit advertisements on TV for people whom have taken Accutane, so this is serious and this drug should be taken very seriously.  Accutane is very toxic to many organs of the body, especially the liver and kidneys, therefore monthly or even weekly blood tests are now required to monitor for problems.  I must say that it did work on my cystic acne, though.  I did not have much acne afterwards.

There are other treatments nowadays that have actually been found to be just as effective as Accutane on treating cystic acne without the harmful side effects like the TCA skin peel, Obagi Blue Peel, and laser therapy.  These will all cause a controlled chemical burn to the dermis or exterior layer of skin which will remove the outer layers of skin, and unclog pores.  The TCA skin peel and Obagi Blue Peel will also remove excess oil and restore the proper pH or acidity to the skin (which makes an unfavorable environment for the cystic acne causing bacteria that will cause cystic acne).  These treatments have less risk and none of the harmful side effects of Accutane and they don't give you yellow teeth like Tetracycline does.  Article courtesy of Bestskinpeel.com
